Medical science today has a once-unimaginable depth of knowledge about how the human body functions and how we can prevent, treat and cure disease.
Though immense progress has been made, we have far to go. In our R&D laboratories, we approach these challenges armed with our knowledge of biomedical science and motivated by our commitment to relieve human suffering.
Much of this understanding comes from the sequencing of the human genome, something that may help us understand even those illnesses which have been impossible to treat in the past.
We organise our efforts by therapeutic area and carry out extensive research to find medicines which will truly make a difference to patients. Our scientists to study how diseases develop and progress and identify potential drugs that show the most promise to become safe and effective medicines.
Our five Centres of Excellence are:
Biopharmaceuticals: specialising in the exploitation of biopharmaceutical technologies to discover new medicines
Metabolic and viral: e.g. diabetes, obesity, HIV/AIDS, herpes
Microbial, musculoskeletal and proliferative: e.g. tuberculosis, osteoporosis and cancer
Cardiovascular and urogenital: e.g. diseases of the heart, circulation and urinary system
Respiratory and inflammatory: e.g. asthma, influenza, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, allergic rhinitis
