Ronak HealthCare brings revolutionary product "NUCLEUS FSM IOL" to surmount cell adhesion to PMMA IOLs which is one of the major postoperative complication.
Postoperative end ophthalmitis after IOL implantation is still one of the most fearsome complications of cataract surgery. Bacterial adhesion to IOLs during insertion is believed to represent a prominent etiological factor in postoperative end ophthalmitis and in pseudophakic chronic intraocular inflammation. Because the treatment of this disease is difficult and sometimes inefficient, modification of the polymer lens surface may represent a promising approach intended to alter bacterial adhesion.
The idea behind fluorine surface coating of PMMA IOL is to make it more hydrophobic & render it less attractive to cell attachment and cell growth.
Fluorine surface modification is carried out by Gas ionization of PMMA IOL. During this process the hydrogen atoms from the polymer metrix of IOL outer surface is replaced by fluorine atoms.
This surface modification increases the lens hydrophobicity and hence inhibits cell growth without changing the inherent properties of PMMA intraocular lenses.
Hydrophobicity can be monitored by water contact angle measurement.
Contact angle is dependent on the IOL material and coating of the IOL surface. It is a measure of surface tension which in turn defines the relative hydrophobicity of the IOL material.
As shown in the figures above, the contact angle in FSM IOL is significantly higher as compared to the contact angle in case of conventional PMMA IOL. Higher contact angle indicates lower surface adhesion whereas lower contact angle indicates higher surface adhesion.
Advantages of NUCLEUS FSM IOL over conventional non-surface modified IOL:
Higher contact angles increases hydrophobicity.
Smooth lens surface prevents bacterial adhesion.
Lower surface energy inhibits cell growth.
Resistance to silicon and cell adherence.
Reduced inflammatory cell response.
Stronger molecular binding of PMMA with fluorine.
Surface modification enhances optical performance.
Safe to reduce cicatricial response (a scar left by the formation of new connective tissue Over a healing sore of wound) when IOL implantation is used to correct pediatric aphakia.
NUCLEUS FSM IOL significantly addresses the patient problems in following areas:
Glaucoma
Uveitis
Diabetes
Pseudo exfoloation
Pediatric
